R. D.'s Story

Life R. D. Brown since high school graduation: My favorite class at EHS was Journalism with Mr. Cramer and the most inspiring teacher was Mr. Burch. I had a big crush on Janell Clements and my best friend (since grade school) was Dale Brecht. In the summer of 1966, began attending K.S.T.C. (Emporia State). In the fall of 1966, took a full course load (16 semester hours) and worked “part-time” more than 60 hours per week. Grades suffered and lost Draft Board Student Deferment in the spring of 1968. Rather than being drafted into the military, joined the U.S. Army in the Delayed Entry Program in mid-1968. In fall of 1968, began Army Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. In early 1969 attended Military Police School at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Had a more than 50 percent chance of being sent to Vietnam, but was assigned to the 59th Military Police Company in Bremerhaven, West Germany in spring of 1969. m Army Active Duty in fall of 1971 to return to college at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Ultimately graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1974 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Served on Active Duty at Fort Ord (California), Fort Bragg (North Carolina), Redstone Arsenal (Alabama), Bremerhaven (W. Germany), Bramley (England), and Fort Lee (Virginia). Obtained a Masters Degree from Webster University in 1980. Departed Active Duty in late 1986 and began working for the State of Texas in Austin in early 1987. Joined the Active Army Reserve in mid-1988 with assignments to Corpus Christi and Houston, Texas and later Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. Had reserve duty in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Germany. Completed the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1991. The father of three adult children and now retired from the State of Texas as a Section Director and the U.S. Army as a Lt. Colonel.
